Yangtze River Shipping Enters the Age of "Big Harbor and Big Ship"
From 23 to 24, the Yangtze River Deepwater Channel Construction Command held a trade acceptance Union for the second phase of the Yangtze River Deep Water Channel Construction Project under Nanjing in Zhenjiang. The Trade Acceptance Committee unanimously agreed to the trade acceptance. This marks that the 227 km 12.5 m deepwater waterway from Nantong (Tianshenggang) to Nanjing (Xinshengxu) has been completed according to the design standards and has the conditions for trial operation. Since then, the 12.5-metre deep-water channel from Nanjing to the Yangtze River estuary has run through, and 50,000-ton seagoing vessels can reach Nanjing directly.
The 12.5 meters deep water channel construction project under the Yangtze River in Nanjing is a key project to implement the national "one belt and one road" initiative, build the Yangtze River economic belt and build the Yangtze River golden waterway. Large vessels entering the Yangtze River will rewrite the economic territory of Jiangsu and even the whole Yangtze River Basin.
Green Engineering, Better Ecological Structure of Yangtze River
From Nanjing to the estuary of the Yangtze River, the river runs on and on, looking like it used to be.
And the bottom of the river is not what it used to be. The 12.5-metre deep-water channel below Nanjing of the Yangtze River allows the Yangtze River trunk line from Nanjing to Taicang to reach a total length of about 280 kilometres. It can meet the requirements of full-load two-way navigation of 50,000-ton container ships and load-reduction of 50,000-ton other ships. 100,000-ton vessels can be carried to Nanjing by load-reduction and 200,000-ton vessels can be carried by tide to Jiangyin by load-reduction. Up to now, after the completion and acceptance of the first phase of the project from Taicang to Nantong (56 km) in 2015, the second phase of the project from Nantong to Nanjing (227 km) announced that the construction target had been completed half a year ahead of schedule.
"Phase II project is located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River where runoff and tide interact. The movement of water and sediment is complex, the density of navigable vessels on the river surface is high, and the regulation channel is winding and winding." Chang Fang Jianhua, deputy commander of the Yangtze River Deepwater Channel Construction Project Command under Nanjing, introduced that there are many ecological protection zones in particular. They innovatively adopted such structural forms as ecological bottom protection, bank protection and dam body suitable for aquatic organisms to grow and inhabit, and experimentally constructed 100,000 square meters artificial fish nest and 100 mu ecological floating island.
Cao Minxiong, director of the scientific research department of the engineering command, said that the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River is a place where many important economic fish live. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the protection of the ecological environment when harnessing aquatic habitats such as beaches and wetlands.
"Although the thatched house of fish was destroyed during the construction, a luxurious house for fish was finally returned." Huang Zhaobiao, the former director of the Engineering Command, said similarly. During the breeding season of fish from April to July every year, all water construction operations will be stopped to provide an environment for aquatic organism reproduction and aquatic ecological restoration, and the ecological structure of the Yangtze River will be improved.
"The second phase of the project has formed a complete set of technologies for inland waterway engineering construction, 80 units of the project have passed the quality inspection once, and the qualified rate of the project is 100%. Fang Jianhua said that although the project is very complex, when large-scale equipment is fully started, there is not much movement. "Everything is going on quietly, and there are no accidents in the whole process of production."
Benefits are beginning to show and the main artery of water transportation is exerting its power
In early July 2016, the second phase of the 12.5-meter deepwater waterway project under Nanjing of the Yangtze River was opened to Nanjing, and the navigation capacity of the lower reaches of Nanjing of the Yangtze River was significantly improved. Reporters recently interviewed in Nanjing Port, Jiangyin Port, Taicang Port and other ports, found that the throughput of many ports in the Yangtze River has increased significantly, and the trend of large-scale entry ships is obvious.
The cargo ship SECCARADI from the port of Hedland, Australia, with 83200 tons of iron ore, was recently berthed at Dacheng Wharf in Jiangyin Port. Huajiang, chairman of Jiangyin Port, told reporters, "The improvement of waterway conditions has directly promoted the arrival of large vessels. In the past, we imported iron ore. After reducing the load of large vessels in Zhoushan or Lianyungang, they were transported to the port by small vessels. The maximum loading capacity of incoming vessels was more than 40,000 tons. Nowadays, a large ship with 80,000 tons of cargo loaded after unloading can enter the port directly, and the logistics cost can be reduced by about 40 yuan per ton of cargo. That's a real advantage!"
"There are fewer boats, more big ones, less cost for customers and more benefits for ports." Jiangyin Port Trade Union Chairman Liu Hua disclosed that in 2017, Jiangyin Port Group led 273 "Cape" ships with a cargo capacity of 23 million tons, which increased the income of loading and unloading costs by 320 million yuan and reduced logistics costs by about 1.150 billion yuan.
Fang Jianhua introduced that thanks to the opening of the second phase of the project, the maximum draught of vessels entering and leaving the Nantong Tiansheng Port and above increased from 10.8 meters to 11.36 meters, effectively improving the actual cargo loading rate of ships arriving at the port, "especially the regulation of Fujiangsha Waterway and the opening of Fuzhong Waterway, which enabled ships arriving at the ports of Jiangyin and above. From the maximum 70,000 tonnage to 200,000 tonnage, the "Cape" ship with a load of more than 100,000 tonnage has experienced blowout growth.
The deepening of the waterway has comprehensively enhanced the "big ship" effect of the coastal ports of the second phase of the project. Since the beginning of the second phase of the project, the Yangtze River Pilotage Center has led the continuous growth of ship number, and the net tonnage of ships has maintained a double-digit growth every year. As of April 10, 2018, the data show that the Yangtze River Pilotage Center has led 6130 heavy-duty ships with draft water of more than 10.8 meters, including 558 in Zhangjiagang Port, 121 in Jingjiang Port, 1235 in Jiangyin Port, 168 in Changzhou Port, 307 in Taizhou Port, 379 in Zhenjiang Port and 172 in Nanjing Port.
Gold Waterway to Promote the Development of the Yangtze River Economic Zone
The Yangtze River is the most important inland river transport channel in China. In recent years, its transport volume has been ranked the first in the world. The deep-water channel of the Yangtze River accounts for about 80% of the total transport volume of the Yangtze River.
